Ruled by the head and fuelled by the heart
by Lauren Schaefer
Can you hear the change in my voice?
a head and a heart, a battle of choice.
Bodies marked from lust or hate,
a vengeful spark, quelled as anger dissipates.
A curse to a point, some may agree,
What is love if not given freely?
A melody wrapped perfectly to a beat,
to share with those you’ll never meet.
A name sung as a curse or a prayer,
a shirt left behind, I picture you there.
A dozen reasons to leave, but some have to stay,
Why is love so much more than the words we say?
People walking and touching in different spaces,
I remember the feelings, not the faces.
A love can consume us ’til there’s nothing left,
a love can make us whole or leave us bereft.
Do we choose love, or does it choose us?
What makes us say yes, or no, or cuss?
Ruled by the head and fuelled by the heart,
a dangerous thing, a lesson in art.
